Sheriff Seeks Public Help with Budget
Citizens of Larimer County:
The county budget process for 2013 is moving along very swiftly. I need your help to continue to provide necessary public safety services to you.
The current staff recommendation to the commissioners is to reduce the Sheriff's Office public safety budget by over $1 million in 2013. Since 2009, my office has reduced more than 24 employees. This one cut, if adopted by the commissioners, will result in between 15 and 20 additional staff reductions in a single year. It will require a reduction in the deputies assigned to patrol and respond in the rural and remote areas of the county. If the commissioners follow the current 3 year recommendations- I estimate that in 3 years, 1 in 4 law enforcement deputies will be gone and 1 in 5 jail staff will be gone. That would result in an unprecented decrease in public safety.
There is still time to speak up. You can go to http://www.larimer.org/contact.cfm to send messages to your commissioners. You can ask them to reconsider the plan to add $3 million to the reserves (savings) while cutting public safety by $1 million in 2013.
Your Sheriff
Justin
