Prior to being elected and taking office as the 28th Sheriff of Larimer County in January of 2011, Sheriff Justin Smith served as a member of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office for 19 years. Sheriff Smith is a Kansas native who began his law enforcement career in 1987 as a student officer at Wichita State University while he was completing his bachelor's degree in Administration of Justice in 1991. He also was an explorer and reserve deputy with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office in Kansas from 1987 to 1991.
In 1991, he was hired as a patrol deputy at the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. Over the following two decades, he worked in every division of the agency and earned promotion from deputy through the rank of major. During that time, he also completed his master's degree in criminal justice from the University of Colorado - Denver and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Sheriff Smith has been a member of a variety of community boards and commissions over the last two decades and believes in giving back to his community.
