Citizen Academy Fall Session Scheduled

Issued 8/9/12 by John Schulz, Public Information Officer

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office has scheduled the fall session of  its now semiannual Citizens Academy for September 6, 2012 through December 6, 2012.  The weekly class, held in the evening, is limited in size to 35 participants on a first come-first served basis.  The deadline for applications is August 24, 2012.  There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of an academy tee shirt and lunch during the field day.

A second session of the Citizen's Academy was added this year to meet the demand for this popular event.  In addition to adding the second session, the Academy has created an Academy Alumni Association which will assist with the Academy as well as other activities at the Sheriff's Office.

The Citizens Academy is designed to give citizens an overview of the operations of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.  Sessions covering patrol operations, investigations, crime lab, emergency management and emergency services, SWAT and other special units, and volunteer operations are scheduled.  These sessions are presented by the deputies and captains responsible for each area.

In addition, the academy includes a tour of the jail, a look at the emergency communications center,  a K-9 demonstration and the opportunity to ride along with a deputy.  One of the highlights is a field day where citizens will participate in live scenarios responding to calls which includes live shooting with simulated ammunition, making a simulated traffic stop, and processing a crime scene for evidence.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1) 18 years of age
2) No felony convictions
3) No misdemeanor arrests within one year of the start of the academy.
4) Must be a resident or business owner in Larimer County
5) Applicants are expected to make a personal commitment to attend all classes

Additional information and an on-line application is available at http://larimersheriff.org/site-page/citizens-academy.  All applicants are subject to a background check.
